Season 4:

Here in the season 4 review section, Son Tew and Ken-San will give their thoughts on how Season 4 is turning out.  There will be First Impressions, based on the first episodes of the series....2nd Thoughts, which we will post about half-way through Season 4, and Final Synopsis, which will give our final thoughts on the series. We will post this after Season 4 is done

First Impressions:

I have just watched the cut version of Dragon Ball Z: Androids Invasion, and I have to say that it was below my expectations. The episodes themselves are cool, since this is the start of all the android stuff. The fight between Goku and #19 was OK. Except I didn't like the fact that the animation switched in the middle of the fight. It starts out good but then gets sorta sloppy, but that isn't Funimations fault. Without a doubt the best part of this tape was Vegeta going Super-Saiyajin. It's about time to see the coolest guy in DBZ finally get what he deserved. The worst thing about this tape was the music, it just plain SUCKED. It was like some freaky clown crap. And it wouldn't have bothered me if they just played it like once for a minute. But this went on and on and on. It really got on my nerves and distracted me from enjoying the episodes themselves. Let's hope Funimation improves on this next time. The only thing I really noticed with the editing was in the Japanese version Android 20 punched a hole in Yamcha's chest, in the cut version Android 20 is strangling Yamcha, and in the next scene there's a hole in his chest. Interesting..... Overall I think Funimation did an ok job with this one but they definitely need to improve on the MUSIC.

Well, I just saw the "Androids: Invasion" tape, and, well I'm not sure what to say.  Don't get me wrong, the dialogue is getting quite a bit closer to the original.  However, the music still takes a steady decline into the unknown depths of weirdness.  They play that whacked out accordion crap from the Garlic Jr. saga like 5 times in this tape!  Its very odd.  Here Android 20 is murdering innocent civilians and they're playing this circus music!  The result is a very disturbing and demented scene.  Not only do they play it there however, but in all the big fights for the rest of the tape!  Funimation, if you are reading this, PLEASE, try and take the "no music" approach of the Japanese version.  It makes everything much more meaningful and powerful.  Anyways, not much was actually cut from this tape, besides a shot where Android 20 punches a hole through Yamcha's chest.  We're not really missing out on much there, but it will be kinda confusing for people who have never seen these episodes that one second Yamcha's being held by Android 20, and the next second he has a big gaping hole in his chest.  There was one thing that I loved about this episode however.  There is about 4 seconds when Yamcha is being strangled with.....get ready for it........NO MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  You heard me, NO MUSIC!!!!!!  For a second, I thought I was watching a fansub.....Well anyway, Yamcha and Tenshinhan's voices seem to be improving.  So overall how do I feel?  I'm still not sure.  Funimation is improving the dialogue which is great....but please, PLEASE, try something different with the music.  The Garlic Jr. saga started with promising music, but then that circus stuff started.....Oh well, the subbed DVD of this should be amazing.

~Son Tew

Our View So Far:  Well, if they keep improving the dialogue like this, who knows what will happen, but let's hope they try improving the music soon.  We're just gonna have to see what happens.....
